Motorola acquired by Google for $12.5 billion dollars

Google buys MotorolaGoogle has just announced the acquisition of Motorola Mobility (the part of Motorola that creates and markets mobile phones) for $40 per share, or approximately $12.5 billion USD in total. This represents a 63% premium over the Friday stock market closing price. According to Google, Motorola Mobility will be run as a separate business, and that current Android licensees will be able to use the platform as normal.

Google co-founder and CEO Larry Page has written a blog post about the acquisition where he means that the acquisition would “enable us to better protect Android from anti-competitive threats from Microsoft, Apple and other companies.” Google Android partners HTC, Sony Ericsson and LG have issued supportive statements regarding the acquisition, stating appreciation for Google’s efforts to strengthen and protect the Android platform.

Originally intended as a free platform, Android licensees now have to pay licensing fees to Microsoft for every sold device. A huge driving force behind the acquisition of Motorola Mobility was to use its vast patent library (14,600 granted and 6,700 pending) to protect the Android platform.

HTC Holiday images and specs leaked from Craigslist

HTC HolidayCraigslist: classifieds for leaked gadgets?  That’s what happened to the HTC Holiday.  A lucky searcher came across the leaked images that were posted on a Craigslist posting and quickly scattered them across the internet.  The pictures also give us an idea of some specs, which were previously rumored about.  We believe the Holiday will bring a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, a 4.5-inch qHD display, Android 2.3.4, an 8MP rear-facing camera and a 1.MP front-facing camera.  Although there is no carrier on the phone, it is rumored to end up on AT&T.  While it’s not yet slated for a release date, we have a hunch that it could be coming near the holidays.

Google activates 500,000 Android devices per day, to reach 1 million by November

Android MascotHalf a million Android devices are activated every day, and that number is growing fast!  By fast, I mean 4.4% per week.  At this rate, Google is set to activate 1 million Android devices per day by November!

How do we know this?  In May 2011, Google announced that they activate 400,000 Android devices every day.  More recently, a tweet from Andy Rubin, one of the creators of Android, revealed that Google now activates 500,000 Android devices per day and that it is growing 4.4% per week.  With some fancy mathematical calculating, we have figured out that Google will hit the 1 million mile marker before November, maybe late October.

Now that Android is growing faster than the speed of light, let’s evaluate.  Let us know, in the comments, which mobile platform you prefer: iOS, Android, webOS, BlackBerry, MeeGo, Windows Phone OS, etc.  Pick your poison!

Android 3.2 Honeycomb coming soon to a tablet near you

Android Mascot

Just a month after Google released Android 3.1 Honeycomb, they are now working on Android 3.2 Honeycomb.  This update to the tablet-only operating system will be rolling out to most Android Honeycomb tablets within a few weeks.  The Huawei MediaPad is the lucky one to already have 3.2.  Of course, with all Android devices, the device manufacturer is responsible for releasing the update.  Therefore, check with your tablet’s manufacturer to see if and when they will be releasing the 3.2 update.

So what’s new in 3.2?  First of all, Google has realized that fragmentation is a big problem among Android devices.  This fragmentation is caused by the various screen sizes across devices that run Android.  Google claims to have added support for a wide range of display sizes.  Furthermore, they have added support for Qualcomm processors, better hardware acceleration, and updates for many built-in apps and widgets.  As always, Google has thrown in some bug fixes, as well.

After Android 3.2 Honeycomb is released, thou shall not expect another Honeycomb release.  After 3.2, we are expecting future versions to be nicknamed “Ice Cream Sandwich”.  Yum!

Huawei MediaPad tablet: comes with 1.2GHz dual-core CPU, first tablet to run Android 3.2

Huawei MediaPadHuawei leaked an image of the MediaPad two weeks ago, and now it’s here! Huawei launches the MediaPad, which is the world’s first Android 3.2 tablet during the CommunicAsia fair in Singapore. The Huawei MediaPad is a 7-inch tablet computer with Honeycomb Android 3.2, which according to Huawei is the same as 3.1, except that it is optimized for 7-inch screens rather than 10-inch screens.

Huawei’s MediaPad tablet comes with a IPS capacitive touchscreen, GPS, dual cameras (1.3 megapixel front, and 5 megapixel back), WiFi, a dual-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm processor and 6 hours of battery life. The MediaPad weighs 390 grams (approx. 0.9 pounds), supports full HD 1080p playback, with HSPA+ 3G internet support, and offers 8GB of internal storage with optional expansion via its microSD slot. The device also comes with HDMI output, Bluetooth, and preloaded apps such as Facebook, Twitter, Flash 10.3 player, Documents To Go and Let’s Golf. So far there’s been no mention of a WiFi-only model, and currently Huawei is working on a pricing structure with carriers. If things goes as planned (i.e. if Apple does not sue), we’ll be seeing the Huawei MediaPad on shelves during the third quarter of this year.
