Girl from Apple’s ad spotted in Samsung’s ad; more disputes?

Tired of hearing Samsung and Apple together in a post? Well, here’s another one. A new Samsung ad has an incredibly similar feel to an Apple one, and it even features the same girl as the iPhone 4S Camera ad. Incredible (not the HTC phone), right? Yup. Especially since Samsung had so many ads that made fun of Apple’s iPhone. Will they stop bickering at each other? Probably not. Anyways, hop after the break for the video ads, and let’s hope they brighten your New Year’s Day!

Untethered jailbreak for Apple TV 4.4.4 with Seas0nPass, iOS app compatibility coming?

After pod2g broke pre-A5 iOS5 devices out of jail, the SeasoNPass tool has also been updated to perform an untethered jailbreak on Apple TVs running the latest 4.4.4. update. Along with the jailbreak, Plex Beta 4 has also been released and is compatible with 4.4.4. This will allow users to extend the TV’s capabilities beyond Apple’s restrictions and bring in features like AirPlay mirroring. Interested? There’s detailed instructions at the source link.

Interestingly, a few hackers may be close to unlocking iOS apps so that they can be used on the Apple TV. Nothing’s been released yet, but follow @themudkip and @westbaer on Twitter for futher updates on that. For now, check out the video of iOS apps running on AppleTV after the break.

Meizu MX on sale January 1st, New Year’s present? *Update: Now on sale!

Following the official announcement of the Meizu MX, the “dream phone” is now on track for release on January 1st, 2012 at a price of 2,999 CNY (Around $470 USD). Yes, on New Years, just like the Meizu M9 launch last year. However, what’s different is that the phone will also be launched in the Meizu Store in Hong Kong, signifying Meizu’s first step outside mainland China. Also, due to the difference in taxes, the price in Hong Kong will be 3,099 HKD, which is about $400 USD. As always, the company will focus on satisfying pre-orders first, with a limited supply for walk-in customers.

Apple applies for facial recognition patent, Siri will recognize your face

We know Siri can recognize our voice, but in the future Siri might recognize how we look too and will not put up with our comments on Siri’s appearance. An Apple patent application released today includes a facial recognition system that uses minimal computing power, and works whether you’re inside or outside. The technology compares your look with a reference model user profile obtained from the photo it took when setting it up. Does this remind you of something? Oh right, the facial recognition feature on ICS. Let’s hope this will work better when Apple makes use of it: maybe on Siri’s 5th birthday?

LG unveils 84-inch “ultra definition” 4K TV, being bought to CES 2012

LG had already talked about 4K LCD televisions at Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2011 last year, but they weren’t able to make it out this year. However, the company has announced that for 2012, it’s bringing an 84-inch “ultra definition” (3840 x 2160) TV to CES 2012 along with its “world’s largest” 55-inch OLED. It will have all of LG’s Cinema 3D and Smart TV features, along with support for the upgraded Magic Motion remote and voice control. There’s no word on prices or when it’ll hit the consumers’ home, but it does look production-ready compared to other prototypes. Although 4K-res video content isn’t easy to obtain, LG is jumping ahead for its 3D. Their Cinema 3D technology uses a Film Pattern Retarder screen and passive glasses that result in lowered resolution, but it’ll still be at least an HD picture. For now, 4K at home is brought by Sony and JVC’s high-priced projectors, but we’ll probably see other companies’ upgrades at CES 2012. Press release after the break for some details.

Intel’s 32nm Medfield SoC specs and benchmarks peeked at

Do you remember Intel’s Medfield? It’s Intel’s System-on-a-Chip (SoC) processor for smartphones and tablets. Although it is far from breaking into the market, we finally have some concrete details on its specs and capabilities. VR-Zone obtained information on Intel’s first true SoC and it’s as strong as other competitors. The chip was put into a reference tablet running at 1.6GHz with 1GB of RAM, and Android benchmarks showed that it held it’s own against a Tegra 2 and a Snapdragon MSM8260. However, power consumption on these test chips are a bit high, but Intel hopes to lower them before production while pushing HD video out.

Untethered jailbreak released for all iOS 5 devices except A5 ones

It’s only a few weeks since pod2g showed us his untethered jailbreak for iOS 5, and now… it’s here! The exploit is incorporated into redsnow 0.9.10, the Pwnage Tool and Chronic Devteam’s Cydia package. It frees the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 (including the CDMA variant), iPad 1, iPod Touch 3G and 4G from its shackles as long as they are on iOS 5.0.1. Also, pod2g is now looking for a way to free A5-based devices from jail too, but he’ll get some rest for now – since it takes a lot of energy to free devices from Apple’s shackles. Instructions are at the source link, so hop on.

Also, readers have reported some bugs, and here’s some fixes for the common ones after the break.

Spire brings Siri-love to any jailbroken iOS 5 device legally, proxy still required

Earlier on, Siri was ported to iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4G, and the iPhone 3GS by hacker Grant Paul (chpwn on Twitter). Today, Grant Paul, along with Steven Troughton-Smith and Ryan Petrich, released Spire, an installer that will easily set up Siri on any jailbroken iOS 5 device. Yes, ANY iOS 5 device. That includes the iPads, iPhone 4, iPod Touches and the iPhone 3GS. Wait, wasn’t it possible before? It’s now completely legal, unlike the copyright infringement in previous hacks. After installing, the program will download a 100MB Siri off Apple’s servers, so it’ll be better to do it over WiFi. However, you still need to set up a proxy server with info from an iPhone 4S to connect to Apple’s Siri servers. The program’s available on Cydia now though, so hop on if you have good friends with an iPhone 4s. Also, Troughton-Smith has reassured that once the iPhone 4S is jailbroken the proxy server issue should be fixed.

LG’s 55-inch “world’s largest” OLED HDTV display is official

Although the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2012 in Las Vegas is right around the corner after Christmas and New Year, LG has already gave us a preview of the “world’s largestOLED panel for CES. LG has shown us smaller screens before and it also promised a 55-inch OLED HDTV for mid-2012, and it seems like they are keeping that promise. LG’s technology uses white OLEDs overlaid with colors, claiming that it makes for a lower error rate and more high-def pictures. There’s a picture of LG’s super skinny 5mm prototype after the break along with the press release. Hop on.

MOTOACTV turned into a tablet after being torn down and rooted

Earlier in the year, we reported on Motorola’s release of the MOTOACTV, the Nike+ competitor. Today, Chris Wade, the developer behind the DingleBerry PlayBook hack, has teared the watch open and investigated on the innards of the watch on his hand. He found that the watch is powered by an OMAP 3630 clocked at 600MHz and 256MB of RAM. After completing the surgery, he managed to root the watch and turned it into a 1.6-inch tablet by sideloading Honeycomb. He even managed to get Market access on the watch, allowing him to install Angry Birds. I guess ants and bugs can now enjoy tablets just like us.
