Office for iPad? Probably just a rumour

Earlier today, The Daily posted the above photo, claiming that Microsoft Office will land on the iPad soon, but Microsoft has replied saying that the story “is based on inaccurate rumors and speculation” and that it’ll be clear ” in the “coming weeks“”. Yes, that’s right, the double quotation marks aren’t a mistake; Microsoft put that themselves. Although The Daily‘s editor Peter Ha replied that the app was demoed to them by someone at Microsoft, the software giant is still denying the story. I guess we’ll have to wait and see for ourselves in the “coming weeks”.

Update:

ASUS Transformer needs to wait a bit longer to take a bite out of ICS, probably March

It looks like Google’s temporarily holding ASUS Transformer users back from taking a big bite out of ICS. Last time we heard, ASUS submitted the update to Google for approval, but now the earlier “mid-February” deadline has passed. Instead, the company just announced that the update will land February/March, which is pretty vague. For now, just sit back and enjoy Honeycomb, at least until an Ice Cream Sandwich is delivered over-the-air for your Transformer.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1? Possibly

We know there’s a Samsung Galaxy Note and a Galaxy Tab 10.1, but a fusion of the two? That certainly seems likely according to the image above. This possible-slate was named on Samsung’s developer event at Mobile World Congress (MWC), and we’re definitely hoping that a bigger version of the Note will show up. Furthermore, there’s a listing at Backstage looking for a teen student to be filmed using a Galaxy Note 10.1. There definitely can’t be that many typos, right? Also, these two evidence has now been taken off, which increases our suspicion even more. Well, we’ll just have to wait for MWC to see if it’s true. Of course, we’ll be bringing you the latest coverage at MWC.

Absinthe A5 jailbreak released, finally frees the whole family from jail

Remember the jailbreaking “dream team”? Remember 4 days ago they successfully jailbroke the iPhone 4S? Remember your envy of them and hoped that they would release it soon? Well, here it is! The “dream team” has released the Absinthe A5, which provides an untethered jailbreak for the iPhone 4S and iPad 2. Yup, the whole family’s finally free! What made this possible is that over ten million users submitted crash reports which allowed for discovering the exploit used in the jailbreak. Curious to get started? Head over the source link and cut those shackles on your A5 devices.

iPad 3 rumored to bring the improvements you want: faster CPU, higher-resolution, LTE

First of all, keep in mind this is a rumor, but it probably is pretty accurate as several analysts are pretty confident that the iPad 3 will be released in March. Bloomberg is reporting that the iPad 3 will bring a higher-resolution screen, support for LTE and a speedier processor in March. According to the common “unnamed sources”, Apple’s partners are reported to be “ramping up production” of the device this month, with full capacity to hit at February. What else to expect? A quad-core chip and iPad on AT&T and Verizon’s 4G network. Furthermore, if the iPad 3 contains LTE support, then it’s a sign that the iPhone 5 will also house it if Apple is satisfied with the battery life even after LTE. Let’s pray.

ViewSonic E70 tablet brings Ice Cream Sandwich for $169 in March

At CES, there was a pre-production tablet named as the ViewPad E70, at least for now. The tablet has a 7-inch WVGA touchscreen that will bring along Ice Cream Sandwich on the first day and will be available for $169 (yup, $169) at the end of March. However, there is still some work to be done, especially with the software interface, but keep in mind this is a pre-production model. We’re sure ViewSonic will be able to iron out most of the bugs and make the 1GHz tablet fast with its 4GB of internal storage, WiFi, microSD slot, micro-HDMI port and the front-facing camera. Some models will also contain 3G connectivity if you’re one of those people that need internet access everywhere. Hit the break for a hands-on video!

iOS 5.1 beta suggests Apple may be testing quad-core mobile CPUs

9to5Mac has dug up several images from the latest iOS 5.1 beta that details the number of cores. In the hidden panel, single-core A4s are referred as “/cores/core.0″ while dual-core A5s are “/cores/core.1″, and now a listing, “/cores/core.3″ popped up. After some simple counting, this should indicate a CPU that has four cores. However, this doesn’t mean that Apple is planning to incorporate quad-core A6 chips, as Apple loves to put misleading details in their firmwares. Although that is usually true, it is logical to presume that a quad-core iPhone or iPad will hit us one day. Perhaps after the Meizu MX get’s a quad-core CPU?

Toshiba promises world’s thinnest and lightest 10.1-inch tablet and 13.3-inch Ultrabook among other things

In the industry, claiming titles like “world’s thinnest” and “world’s lightest” – especially in events like CES – is like a child playing with fire. These difficult titles are hard and dangerous to claim, as there really is no “lightest” or “thinnest” if technology continues to improve. Nonetheless, Toshiba is promising both the thinnest and the lightest 10.1-inch tablet and 13.3-inch Ultrabook to be revealed at CES, which is 4 days later. Although the promised Ultrabook could be referring to the Portege Z835, we think Toshiba’s got one more in their arsenal. Also, the company will be demonstrating an OLED reference tablet with waterproof construction and wireless power along with a 55-inch QFHD television with glasses-free 3D. Not much record-breaking there, but Toshiba is still a company to lookout for at CES. Stay tuned, as we’ll bring you the latest juicy details from CES 2012 shortly.

Intel’s 32nm Medfield SoC specs and benchmarks peeked at

Do you remember Intel’s Medfield? It’s Intel’s System-on-a-Chip (SoC) processor for smartphones and tablets. Although it is far from breaking into the market, we finally have some concrete details on its specs and capabilities. VR-Zone obtained information on Intel’s first true SoC and it’s as strong as other competitors. The chip was put into a reference tablet running at 1.6GHz with 1GB of RAM, and Android benchmarks showed that it held it’s own against a Tegra 2 and a Snapdragon MSM8260. However, power consumption on these test chips are a bit high, but Intel hopes to lower them before production while pushing HD video out.
