In 2011, many people were anticipating the iPhone 4S to undergo a radical transformation similar to the transition to the iPhone 3GS to the iPhone 4 but the iPhone 4S is still a fantastic device – it came with the built-in voice assistance with Siri and iOS 5 that made the phone smarter with the notification bar. Moreover, the camera is amazing! Even though the phone still looks fantastic and functions smoothly, we’re looking for a redesign of the iPhone in iPhone 5. We, the customers are looking for better durability, usability and aestetics. Will the Apple deliver? Well, let’s dive into the leaks and rumours to get a better idea!
Note: I write this article assuming that these rumours are in fact true but there is no guarantee that this is how the iPhone 5 is going to be.
Appearance: Sleek aluminum finish?

The iPhone 4S looks great with the front and back glass pieces and it certainly feels like a premium product but it shatters our hearts when the glass pops a few cracks. This rumour will certainly fix half the problem as the photo below shows metal backing while the sourcing of the front piece of glass is uncertain whether or not it will be as tough. We sure hope this is a durable device.

Did you covet your friend’s Galaxy SII or Galaxy Note’s large display? I have and ever since wanted my iPhone’s display to be at least a bit bigger. Reading, texting and every day use is okay but browsing and watching videos is much more comfortable on a larger display. This clip below shows a 4” display for the front plate for the iPhone 5:
The loudspeakers, connector doc and 3.5 mm headphone jack have been relocated at the bottom of the phone. Refering to the image, the 30-pin proprietary Apple jack is made into a smaller one after using it for over 7 years. Maybe its the approriate time to use a smaller jack so that the space can be better utilized for the loudspeaker or microphone.
Software Update: iOS 6
After a year of using iOS5, I assume iOS6 will bring some new innovation to the table. I suspect that there is goign to be an update in camera software to include panorama mode. Additional changes to the iOS6 is rumoured to be bring improvements to the iTunes Store, App Store and the iBookstore user interface. It may look a bit dry at the moment and it could be spiced up with some eye-candy. While competing with Windows Phone’s “ME” tile, I suspect that iOS6 will improve Facebook integration along with other sharing options. The implementation of 3D Maps might also be a move to try to become more independent of Google. More information can be found here.
Edit: An updated article about of the actual iOS6 can be found here .
Hardware Changes: Fast, faster and ZOOM
Nothing is set in stone but I wouldn’t be surprised to see updates in network connectivity, processing speed and memory. I suspect that the minimum storage might bring minimun storage to 16GB while ramping up the processor and bringing up the RAM up to 1GB. Wi-Fi connectivity with the BCM4334 chip will improve battery life. And last but not least, the iPhone 5 should have rapid fast 4G LTE connectivity that rivals high speed cable internet service in terms of speed. I would also love to see another improvement to the camera – I’d love to be blown away again this year like the last. More information can be found here.
