When IPv4 was released, no one thought the 4.3 billion IP addresses would be used up. Of course, that was before phones, fridges and televisions joined game. Last year, all the IPv4 addresses was exhausted; fortunately, there’s another system that’s almost ready: IPv6. On June 8th, 2011, it was “World IPv6 Day” and several sites including Google, Bing, and Facebook tested the system to see if there were any problems. The results? IPv6 will officially be activated on June 6 of this year, with the addition of around 340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,456 addresses available. Looks like it should last us a while, at least after December 21, 2012.
